The Supply Chain Team is a global operation responsible for getting hundreds of millions of products from farms and factories to our millions of customers each and every day.

We've built our reputation on frequently reinventing our supply chain to respond to how our customers want to shop. In the 60s we were the first to design a supply chain to serve out of town supermarkets. In the 90s we supported the first 24 hour stores for the first time. And in 2000 we led the way in introducing online grocery shopping.

The demands on Tesco's supply chain have never been greater. Our customers want more flexibility in the way that they shop and demand an ever growing range of products.

The Supply Chain team is based in our Welwyn Garden City head office. We're made up of 3 divisions: Supply Chain Operations, Internal Consulting and Inbound Logistics Wholesale Operations. Each division contains several specialist teams.

 

Supply Chain Operations

In our UK Operations team, you can make an immediate impact by partnering with:

  • growers and manufacturers to build end to end plans to deliver freshness, optimum stockholding and great availability in the most efficient way
  • internal functions to shape & deliver the business plans of the Customer & Buying teams using relevant data, collaborative forecasts & ordering to provide the right stock levels
  • Store colleagues where we support the Tesco retail operation teams in delivering great availability both in the traditional shopping trip in store, but also for our online customers

Transformation & Internal Consulting

  • Insight & Strategy: we use relevant data to develop strategic insight & to monitor how Tesco is performing. The information we provide informs the discussions and decisions made by the Tesco Leadership every day.
  • Supplier Collaboration: we build long term relationships with our suppliers by better aligning and integrating our supply chains. For example:
    • Improving ‘demand planning' to give our supplier's maximum notice about what we want to order and when
    • Working with our suppliers to minimise the journey travelled for each of our products from production to store.
  • Streamlining Operational Processes: we optimize the flow of stock through our supply chain. For example:
    • Ensuring our supplier's trucks and our trucks are as full as possible
    • Minimising the number of times we touch a product
  • Customer Forecasts & Ordering: we support our stores by using relevant data to predict how much of each product our customers are going to want in each store. Accurate forecasts enable us to order the minimum amount of stock required to satisfy the demands of our customers. We are continually developing our ordering systems to minimise waste whilst maximising on-shelf availability.

Inbound Logistics & Wholesale Operations

  • Inbound Operations: Managing the international logistics operation across our Non-Food and Food divisions. Working closely with the world's largest shipping lines, freight forwarders and road and rail transport providers.
  • Wholesale Operations: Managing the growing wholesale export operation which supplies Tesco product to our International businesses and wholesale customers who operate in all four corners of the globe.
  • Logistics Development: Working on both tactical and strategic change projects which help shape our inbound and outbound operations to best cater for the changing needs of our customers.
  • Logistics Procurement: Managing the procurement of all services required to run our global logistics operation – covering large and small scale tender processes and strengthening our understanding of global trade and how this enhances our ability to procure the best services to run a world class international logistics operation.

With more than 30 million cases of food ordered every week from our suppliers, we manage one of the largest supply chains in the UK.

With over 3,300 stores and over 310,000 colleagues operating in Tesco, we ensure the right level of stock arrives in each shop, at the right time.

Forecast & Ordering

In Forecast & Ordering, we work closely with suppliers, buying teams and stores to forecast and manage supply of stock for Tesco, ensuring both in store and online customers have the freshest, best quality products available at all times of the day. Be it promotional volume, seasonal planning or small events like Reading Festival, we build plans based on what customers want on a local and national level and help store colleagues meet our customer needs.

  • Improving availability for our customers
  • Using our scale for good by reducing food waste while improving freshness and quality
  • Improving our efficiency by building a strong business, in partnership with our suppliers

Transformation & Internal Consulting

In the Transformation team we are at the forefront of innovation, bringing together analytical problem solving with the experience of implementing large and complex change projects.

Our job is to understand the needs of our 23 million customers a week and manage the flow of products so whatever they want, we have available. We're constantly looking for ways to improve by adapting and innovating within the supply chain.

We work as internal consultants who apply an analytical approach to problems. By using advanced levels of mathematical modelling and algorithm design, we can analyse the impact of weather, special offers or markdowns on buying patterns. Predicting what we sell helps customers get when they want and helps stores not have too much stock or waste. As Tesco operates on such a large scale, even small changes can equate to millions of pounds of savings.

Alongside our work in the UK we also work with suppliers and colleagues from across the world to develop and deliver continuous improvement for the Tesco Group Supply Chain.

Inbound Logistics & Wholesale Operations

In Inbound Logistics & Wholesale Operations, we look after products from source, right through to the point when they land in our or our wholesale partners' distribution centres or stores.

It's a truly global operation, sourcing from over 70 countries and ensuring our customers get the best quality products, in the fastest time, at the best price in all the markets we sell Tesco product whilst always striving to reduce waste and minimise our impact on the environment.

However, we cannot achieve this alone. We work closely with the UK Supply Chain team and other Tesco operations teams around the world. We also collaborate with our commercial and sourcing colleagues, as well as our global network of suppliers.

The key deliverables we look after are:

  • Owning strategic relationships with logistics suppliers
  • Ensuring the right networks are in place to deliver great availability
  • Negotiating millions of pounds worth of logistics services
  • Operational management of 120,000 container movements and 6million KGs of airfreight per year.
  • Driving efficiencies in how we move goods through optimising our network from source to store
