Charitable Work

Race for Life

As National Sponsor of Cancer Research UK's Race for Life, Tesco has helped to raise over £135 million since 2002. In 2006, 750,000 ladies, including nearly 23,000 Tesco staff, took part in events in their local communities across the UK.

This year, we hope to have 800,000 women taking part, including 24,000 Tesco staff, and we are aiming for a fundraising target of £60 million.

Women come together to walk, jog or run the 5k course. You don't have to be an athlete to take part in your local event, walking the 5k course only takes around an hour!

Cancer Research UK's 10k Runs

This is the third year that Tesco has supported the Cancer Research UK 10k's runs.

In 2007, there are 34 runs that will take place at spectacular venues across the country every Sunday throughout September and October.

We're hoping that 36,000 men and women will help to raise £3.8 million to help fund Cancer Research UK's ground breaking research to find out how to prevent, diagnose and treat different kinds of cancer.

Our Charity of the Year

We aim to choose a charity which is close to the hearts of our staff and customers, works locally in the communities we serve and is focused on delivering practical benefits. The Charity of the Year becomes the main focus for staff fundraising and receives a 20% 'top up' from the Tesco Charity Trust.

Under the partnership theme of Crisis care in your neighbourhood, Tesco has chosen to support the British Red Cross as our Charity of the Year for 2007. One of the key attractions of the campaign is that it is geared towards helping people at a local level.

Hundreds of thousands of people are hit by a crisis every year in the UK - from an accident or illness, to a flood or fire. For those people, it can be devastating leaving them feeling alone, vulnerable and with no-one to turn to for help. The British Red Cross makes sure people get the support they need to help them through the emergency so that they can get on with their lives. By providing care, life-saving equipment and skills, the Red Cross helps people cope with a crisis in their own community.

Tesco employees in over 2,000 Tesco stores across the UK will raise money to directly benefit people in local communities through fundraising events in store throughout the year. Last year such events included sponsored head shaves, Stars in their Eyes competitions, Dressing Up Days, parachute jumps and much more!

It is estimated that in 2006, our staff raised a minimum of £2.4-2.5m for Whizz-Kidz.
