Joined Tesco July 1984
The roles I've undertaken have always pushed me - but I've been lucky to work with people who are very bright, supportive and team focused.
I started my career at Tesco as a Research Assistant in the Research Unit - the equivalent of joining on one of the graduate schemes today. My core task was the application of robust analytic techniques to Site Location analysis. This led to the development of a series of gravity modelling systems for sales forecast and strategy development. The culmination of this research was the launch of the Tesco Geographic Information System (GIS) in 1996.
In 1997 I took the role of International Statistics Manager in support of the Site Research teams, initially in Central Europe, then in Asia. Its purpose was to support the development of the Site Location function in the international business and assessment of new market opportunities overseas.
2004 saw the creation of the Insight Unit and I became part of Business Research'. I worked on a number of new market opportunities, with much effort expended on the US. Then, this year, with the referral of the Grocery Market to the Competition Commission, I'm now part of the dedicated Tesco Project Team.
So, as you can see, my career has certainly been busy and varied too! The roles I've undertaken have always pushed me - but I've been lucky to work with people who are very bright, supportive and team focused. Along the way, their help has always been appreciated! I just hope that those joining today make the most of the wealth of opportunities there are at Tesco to experience as much as I have over the next 20 or so years.
