Personnel Manager

"I was wrong! In reality it was much more involved than I thought and offered a lot more challenges. There was also a lot to learn and plenty of opportunities to learn it."

"I joined Tesco as a Management Trainee and progressed to a Customer Service Manager, then a Fresh Food Trading Manager. Finally in 1996, I move to my current role. As a Personnel Manager I try to influence positive morale among staff and managers, and ensure that we select the best candidates for positions in our stores. This ensures that the customer receives excellent service.

"I was attracted to Tesco because I knew it was a successful company and believed it would be exciting to work in a fast-paced environment. Having worked in retail for 5 years before joining Tesco, I expected it to be very similar.

"I was wrong! In reality it was much more involved than I thought and offered a lot more challenges. There was also a lot to learn and plenty of opportunities to learn it. Over the years, I have attended many management training courses, which have included training and review techniques, employment law, managing and forecasting budgets, coaching techniques and performance management.

"Why all this training? Because no two days are ever the same - which is something I love about the job. Another great thing about it is that I'm allowed to job share, which is absolutely fantastic as I have two young daughters - so I get the best of both worlds at Tesco."
