Store Manager

Joined Tesco: February 1997

My Dad worked for Tesco and I loved hearing about it from a very young age. It always sounded a really exciting and dynamic business to be part of.

Soon after I joined the company myself - as a part-time General Assistant when I was at university - and I quickly decided that retail was definitely for me. Mostly because I loved the interaction with customers and the rest of the team.

I've worked in 10 stores since then and worked my way through a variety of section management positions. I've headed up Checkouts, Petrol Filling Station, Training, Personnel and now I'm managing a store of my own. Through my Dad, I knew it would be challenging but very rewarding. And that, if I worked hard and showed the right qualities, the sky would be the limit. I'd love to see my career progressing to a move into managing within the Extra format over the next couple of years - there's little to beat the buzz of working in a large, busy and well run store.

I feel my training has been second to none too. I've progressed through the Options Programme with each new promotion. On top of the standard in-store training that all retail staff receive, I've attended a wide range of corporate workshops at store level. I've also attended a week-long up-skilling course for My Job training as well as attending the Manchester Business Course which was another week-long residential course.

Just as important as the formal training, however, has been the on-the-job training I've received from managers at different stores along the way. I've had heaps of support and the upshot of that is that I always feel confident tackling each new challenge.
