Tesco offered a fantastic opportunity to...gain experience in all aspects of UK tax - and also gain exposure to international tax issues.

I joined Tesco because I wanted a move into industry without specialising in a particular area of tax. So, as a large UK retailer, which also had an international presence, Tesco offered a fantastic opportunity to work in a commercial environment and gain experience in all aspects of UK tax - and also gain exposure to international tax issues.

My main responsibility in my current role is to ensure Tesco meets its obligations with HM Revenue & Customs. This involves ensuring that we file our corporation tax returns on time, and pay the right amount of tax when due.

On a day-to-day basis, I need to liaise with other parts of the business to understand what they're doing and assess any likely tax implications. For example, today I could be liaising with the Tax Manager in Poland in respect of the Polish half-year results. Tomorrow I may have a meeting with our Tesco.com team to discuss the tax implications of a new business initiative.

Tax is a very technical area so I need to be able to explain complex issues to the business in a way that can be understood. But whatever the department I work with, they always know their job and are willing to help. That says a lot about the team approach everyone has here.
