Store Director
Joined Tesco: September 1995
When I joined Tesco as a Graduate Trainee, I was looking for a career with long-term opportunities. Twelve years on, I've received much more besides.
Back in 1995, Tesco was still relatively new to Scotland. At the time, I was getting ready to launch myself into the career world, and I was really impressed by Tesco's progressive and forward-thinking business strategy - particularly in terms of the Graduate Training Programme they offered. I signed up for it and never looked back.
Since then, I've taken on a range of roles including Personnel Manager, Combined Trading Manager, Group Personnel Manager, Format Personnel Manger for Superstores North and Store Manager. My education didn't stop with my initial training, either. I've been on loads of different courses, and I even managed to complete a postgraduate degree while working in Human Resources.
These days, I'm working as Store Director, a position I enjoy for the variety it affords. Each day offers something new - whether I'm visiting one of my stores, checking in to see how a refit's going, or reviewing KPIs from home. In fact, the flexibility I get in terms of my working arrangements is another real bonus. When I had my little girl, I was able to do a four-day week when I returned to work.
Looking ahead, I'm excited about what the future has in store. I'd like to work my way up to a position at Head Office, but as we continue to grow, the opportunity to take my skills overseas appeals to me too.
