Store Manager
Joined Tesco: May 2004
With three years of experience under my belt, I can safely say that the "Every little helps" philosophy applies as much to the staff at Tesco as it does to the customers.
I joined as a Safe Hands Store Manager, which basically means I got plenty of support and hands-on managerial experience before jumping straight into managing my own store. After six weeks, I was promoted to Store Manager at the Superstore in Barkingside, a position I held for nearly two years before moving on to the Gallions Reach Extra.
I see myself as an ambitious, career-driven sort of person, and eventually I'd like to work my way up to Operational Director. From a strategic point of view, managing a Tesco Extra is fantastic experience. As well as heading up a team of 500, I've had the chance to expand my knowledge of our huge non-food offer. I've even seen our mezzanine through a refit! When you add all these experiences up, they've definitely made me a better retailer.
Looking beyond the opportunities for career progression, the best thing about my job is the people. Despite our size, we have a really friendly team atmosphere , and as Store Manager, it's something I work hard to foster. At the end of the day, it's my responsibility to lead the customer experience in store, and I want to set the best example I can. There's nothing more rewarding than seeing the members of my team progress their careers too.
