Our approach

How it works

We divide our commercial food team into a number of categories, each working under its own Commercial Director. Categories include Chilled, Frozen, Dairy, Convenience, Grocery, Produce, Meat, Fish and Poultry, Bakery, Impulse and Beers, Wines and Spirits.

There are specialist areas too, such as International Buying and Trading Law, not to mention technical disciplines.
Within each category, each team aims to lead the business to even greater levels of innovation, even greater efficiency and even better leveraging of our global capability and scale.

Working in this area will give you a rich insight into the workings of a complex and world-class business - not to mention real ownership and accountability too.

Working together with our suppliers

The relationships we have with our suppliers are vital to our success. We treat our suppliers, as we like to be treated, in a fair, honest and responsible way, sharing our knowledge and helping them to develop new products that follow customer trends. After all, the relationships we have with our suppliers are vital to our success as helping their business grow, helps ours grow.

In February 2006, we conducted our second supplier viewpoint survey to give us anonymous, confidential feedback on what it is like to work with Tesco. Over 90% of suppliers have reported that we are trustworthy, reliable, consistent, clear, helpful and fair, although there are always things we can do to improve.

Doing it right

We work hard to make sure we're always ethically sound and where possible, environmentally responsible. It's all part of our belief in collaborative buying - which gets us closer to our suppliers, and in turn delivers better value for our customers. That's why all our buyers are trained to understand and comply with the Supermarket Code of Conduct.
