They've also got an uncanny sense for products that our customers will want - and a real flair for innovation.
So keeping up with the latest trends just isn't enough - you need to know what people are going to want in 12 months' time.
Right across Tesco we operate a 'buy for less' programme. And our buyers are known for their keen bargaining skills when it comes to negotiating with suppliers.
As well as making good business sense, it lets us pass the savings we make onto our customers so that they can enjoy the best possible prices on everything they buy.
Merchandisers
When it comes to giving customers as much choice in non-food ranges as they're used to in food, there are all sorts of logistical issues to work out. There are promotions to plan, stock levels to decide, trading calendars to organise and budgets to manage. So it's a good job we have such a highly skilled and well-organised team of merchandisers on our side.
They're the ones responsible for making sure customers always get hold of what they need, seeing to it that the right number of products are in the right place at the right time.
Using a well-proven mix of customer insight, keen analytical skills and a natural aptitude for numbers, they predict what's going to be popular - then control the flow of stock to make sure there's enough for everyone.
Technical & Product Developers
Safe cots for newborns or the very latest musical phenomenon - getting it right is a big challenge. But with expert technical input, we're confident that we can deliver results that our customers will really appreciate.
Working within your category as part of the Commercial Team, you'll ensure product safety, legality, quality and fitness for purpose. As well as innovation and new product development, you'll also be responsible for checking that every one of our products complies with our set specifications.
International scope
Taking advantage of the opportunity for international travel, you'll work directly with suppliers and colleagues all over the world, conducting factory audits as required.
You could be involved in almost anything, from ensuring the quality of our packaging to the chemistry behind our cleaning products. You'll also keep up-to-date with the latest technological advancements affecting our manufacturing processes.
But whatever your responsibilities, your impact on the business will be vital and widespread.
