Danielle - Home & Health Manager - Tesco Wales

Job Profile: Danielle

Home & Health Manager

Tesco Mid Glamorgan

Attended Mountain Ash Comprehensive School. Achieved nine GCSEs and then took A-level Art and a BTEC in Physical Education – the equivalent of two A-levels.

I heard about the Tesco Trainee Management Programme while searching on the internet for management trainee schemes. I looked at other organisations but it was Tesco’s values that won me over. Here, people treat each other as they would like to be treated themselves. It also helped that I was joining the UK’s number retailer. I knew I would be able to learn great management skills and have the chance to develop my career.

My parents were really happy that I was starting a career with a prosperous, leading company. But I think my friends were jealous. However, I did this for myself.

“I wanted a career at a young age, independence and a well-paid job with a chance to grow and develop with the company.”

Considering that I am now a Home & Health Manager in a Superstore, I think I made the right choice. After all, a lot of the qualifications students gain from university have no relevance in the real world. Plus, there aren’t enough jobs for all the people coming out of education, especially with the economic situation.

The advantages of the Management Programme? Where do I begin?! The support network; the structured timescale for learning; making lots of new friends; growing in confidence; learning new skills and knowledge; getting trained and signed off as Duty Manager; getting signed off as Line Manager within six months; being well paid, (especially compared to other retailers); and that feeling of achievement when I look at how I’ve performed. I have the highest sales on superstore south for health and beauty.

Perhaps the best thing is working in a fast-moving company and adapting to change.

“Here, I’m able to have a career and the chance to progress to the senior team.”

I have already completed numerous training courses; trained to Gold standard on stock control; finished a placement for fresh food stock control manager; been signed off as Duty Manager and as Health, Home and Seasonal Manager. My next step is Personnel Manager.

I think I have the same opportunities on the Tesco Trainee Management programme as I would get on the Graduate scheme. Mainly because my Personnel Manager and Store Manager are very supportive and proactive about my development. In fact, the general team is supportive too and willing to help with anything. Work is fun and I enjoy it, as there’s great team spirit. I would definitely recommend the Management Programme to my friends.
