What is your name and job title?

Hi, I’m Cedric and in my current role as Category Procurement Manager for Technology, I am responsible for the Procurement (Goods & Services not for Resale) of Technology, across Tesco group. I primarily oversee Software, Retail Hardware, Professional Services, Infrastructure and Telecoms. My focus is on working effective with our Supplier Relationships and Stakeholder Engagements. I am also responsible for driving the due diligence of our commercial and legal negotiations, along with delivering cost efficiencies.

What were you doing before you joined Tesco?

Before joining Tesco, my career was mainly focused on commercial buying (goods sold for resale). I spent 4 years working for Booker Cash & Carry, specialising in Frozen Foods and Non-food buying and 8 years specialising in computer electronics buying for Dixons Stores Group. I also spent 2 and half years based in Prague, Czech Republic.

What attracted you to apply for a role at Tesco?

I have always been a customer of Tesco, even when living in Czech Republic. During my time at Booker Cash and Carry and Dixons Stores Group, quite a few of my colleagues were keen to work for Tesco, I was also open to this idea and Tesco gave me the opportunity to switch from retail buying to Procurement. Tesco also allowed me to move into marketing which is an industry I had never previously worked in.

What do you like most about working at Tesco?

The people. There is a strong focus on valuing others which makes it a great place to work. Also, I love that it is never boring, there are always so many exciting projects that are being developed and it’s great to be involved with some of these.

What is your proudest moment since joining Tesco?

Being promoted after only 2 years in the business was a great achievement for me. At the time I was leading the CE Marketing Procurement team as part of Marketing Procurement. The team contributed towards the saving delivery of £31 million across Tesco Group in which my efforts were noted and I was rewarded with a promotion. Another big moment for me is when I was inducted into the Print Week Power 100, most influential people in the Industry. The Print Week Power 100 is based on a poll from industry professionals. The poll is run to select the industry’s most influential individuals, from printers and buyers to the highest profile business leaders from the manufacturer and supplier’s community so I was very excited and flattered to be nominated in at number 24.

Why do you think Tesco is a great place to work?

There are so many opportunities to develop at Tesco, for example I have been given the opportunity to lead multi-million-pound projects/contracts. It is also great to work with fantastic people who share my values and I feel proud to work for a market leader who deliver for our customers every day and have been recognised as a vital business for consumers during Covid-19.

How does Tesco support you to get the right work life balance?

Working from home can be hard but Tesco has been supportive. We are encouraged to block out space in our diaries for a wellbeing hour and use the 'focus time' to take a break from work and focus on ourselves.

Tell us something that might surprise us about Tesco

To meet demand during coronavirus, over the three months from March to May, Tesco increased its online sales by 48.5% for the period, with online sales soaring by more than 90% in May alone. Tesco doubled its online capacity over just a five-week period!
