Current Role: Regional Resource Manager
Location: North Region
Joined Tesco: January 1979
I have been privileged to have worked for Tesco in a variety of exciting roles and proud to say I will be celebrating 40 years with the business in January 2019. My career started as a part time checkout assistant when we still had the old green shield stamps machine fixed to the top of the till. I wonder if anyone would remember collecting them and sticking them in a book?
My mum used to shop at Tesco in Crawley town centre when I was young and it was the first store I worked in whilst studying for my A ‘levels. Subsequently I’ve worked nationwide in numerous roles, in store and regionally, specialising in training and development, recruitment and everything people focused.
I even met my husband at Tesco, he was a Stock Control Manager in Hertford at the time but we now live in the beautiful Derbyshire countryside and I work remotely. Tesco is really supportive and recognises the benefits of work life balance for colleagues and I appreciate the flexibility and scope my current role gives me.

Raising a family and working full time is always a challenge and in the past, I didn’t feel I had the head space and energy to study. Now is my time and with 32 year’s people management experience under my belt I decided to apply and was accepted for the People Apprenticeship.
Tesco has provided me with many career opportunities and has recognised my contribution over the years and I’m pleased to say continues to do so. I’m hoping the Apprenticeship programme and Level 5 CIPD qualification combined with my experience will support my future goals and personal development
''To me, age is but a number, you never stop learning in life''
The biggest buzz for me is seeing the potential in others and being able to influence and impact their Tesco journey and future career success. Tesco is one big team, my second family, a place where everyone is welcome, a place where I have made friends for life.
To me, age is but a number, you never stop learning in life and I’m proud to be 55 years young. Friends say ‘’isn’t it time to think about retirement and winding down?’’ Certainly not. I’m ramping it up and can’t wait to get started on the programme.
If Jeannette's story inspires you, we launch a variety of Apprenticeship Programme's for external candidates in early September.
