About the role

You will manage our authenticity and safety surveillance testing programmes to ensure the safety, legality and integrity of Tesco products.

This role is an excellent opportunity for a very experienced scientific specialist who is looking for a new stretch that allows them to master their role and refine their leadership style.

You will be responsible for

​The Surveillance and Authenticity Testing Manager is responsible for making sure we have the right product testing programmes to check that the products we sell are safe and legally compliant.  In this role you will:

  • Manage a large testing budget and ensure that we have the right laboratory partners to deliver the testing we need to the standard required 
  • Determine the scope of the testing programmes, particularly in the areas of product composition, authenticity and contaminants and manage delivery of them.
  • Write the policies and processes that help our suppliers and colleagues understand our testing requirements
  • Ensure we remain up-to-date with the latest testing methods, and best practice through engaging with external bodies (such as Government, regulators, trade associations and laboratories)
  • Work with our technical teams and suppliers to investigate and resolve any issues we find
  • Support product incident investigation and crisis response when testing is needed to underpin these activities
  • Defining the scope of our product testing programmes, working in collaboration with the science and policy experts in  the Product Safety and Nutrition team and category technical teams, using an intelligence-led risk based approach
  • Develop a budget for the testing programmes, including identifying value for money laboratory provision for each component of the programme
  • Ensure that the agreed product testing programmes are delivered to plan, on budget and that risks to budget overspend are managed efficiently and effectively
  • Work with the incident response team to agree ad hoc testing to support incident investigation and management
  • Ensure all test results are reviewed to determine those which need further investigation and providing science support to Incident and Technical teams to investigate and close out test failures
  • Oversee and managing the performance of the third party laboratories contracted to deliver the surveillance and authenticity programmes, ensuring that they are meeting SLA/KPI measures
  • Build positive relationships with key internal stakeholders  and externally with relevant Government, Non-Government and Commercial stakeholders to support delivery of our testing programmes.
  • Utilise product surveillance insight to identify emerging and current risks and to enable continuous improvement of product
  • Develop and supporting on policies which underpin the Tesco surveillance programme and requirements on supplier testing.
  • Ensure that high quality KPI reports for the business on performance of the testing programmes are developed, produced and disseminated
  • Maintain an in-depth up-to-date knowledge of product surveillance testing regimes and methods

    People, budgets and resources you will be accountable for:
  • Surveillance Testing Team (Tesco testing analyst & two dedicated laboratory-based support staff)
  • Surveillance Testing Budget

You will need

We are looking for a highly motivated, organised individual who is problem-solving self-starter with a deep enthusiasm for their scientific discipline.  You will have:

  • A Degree level qualification (minimum 2:1) in a relevant science subject (preferably Chemistry or Biochemistry or a closely related subject) 
  • At least 5 years experience in a related industry, retail or regulatory environment
  • Strength and relevant experience in product surveillance  
  • Excellent analytical skills – able to quickly identify root cause and solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills – written and verbal.

Relevant Experience:

  • Degree level qualification (minimum 2:1) in a relevant science subject

  • Strength and relevant experience in product surveillance
