About the role

The Workplace Relations team is a team of Employee relations. Policy and Union relations experts, responsible for setting and overseeing the UK Policy and Union approach as well as setting high level expectations for Employee Relations strategy. The streams of work within the Workplace Relations team are:  Union and Industrial relations issues, employee related change programmes, restructuring and outsourcing, Senior dispute resolution and policy management and oversight.

You will be responsible for

Whilst specific responsibilities will be dependent upon the changing needs of the Tesco business, the following provides an overview of the role’s key responsibilities and measures:

  • Lead the Workplace Relations strategy and plan for Tesco UK, with a focus on developing a proactive and positive workplace relations climate that is aligned with Tesco’s purpose, objectives and values.
  • Accountable for the relationship and key interactions with recognised trade unions and other representative forums as appropriate with a view to securing business performance, employee engagement and legal compliance.
  • Ensure that these Unions relationships continuously evolve to provide the best working environment for Tesco colleagues, and to ensure external and internal factors are appropriately recognised.
  • Ensure any People related complex organisational change programmes across the UK are planned and supported and tracked centrally.
  • Develop the people policy agenda ensuring that our policies are relevant, legal and supportive of our People and business plans
  • Work with our stakeholders across the People and legal teams to drive continuous improvement in Tesco’s delivery of employee relations services ( processes, policies , guidance and advice) including in-house and outsourced providers
  • Develop People capability in the understanding and application of employment law, policies and practices to ensure consistency and manage risk
  • Accountable for the People team involvement in Protector Line (Tesco Whistle blowing service) response and resolution – ensure that colleague responses are appropriate and sit on the governance panel for the UK.
  • Ensure the provision of detailed Employee Relations analytics and data as required to drive proactive improvements
  • Liaise with Employment Legal team to ensure legal risks are fully considered and to ensure consistency of advice and guidance to People teams.
  • This role will best suit an individual who enjoys working as part of a team, is well organised, pragmatic and a lateral thinker with an inquisitive mind who is motivated to make change for the better and, most importantly, puts our customers first.

You will need

You’ll need to have demonstrated experience of:

  • Substantial experience of leading an employee relations and Policy function within a complex, unionised organisation, (including strategy development and implementation)
  • In depth knowledge of employment law and industrial relations practices and their contribution to business success
  • Detailed experience of writing policy in order to support and develop business plan and initiatives
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • Experience of creating and implementing employee relations interventions that have a demonstrable impact on organisational success
  • Flexible approach to problem solving, balancing policy, best practice, legal and business issues to provide pragmatic solutions
  • Credible expert with the ability to influence; evidenced through delivery and up to date knowledge
  • Insight driven – at ease with data and analytics to demonstrate impact and return on investment


  • Ability to build relationships and communicate at all levels within an organisation
  • Ability to demonstrate strong written, verbal communication and presentation skills to all levels of seniority and disciplines within the organisation. 
  • Inspiring leader, with an ability to engage their team and the wider organisation
