About the role

The Role – System Engineering Manager  (Hosting Edge Operations Manager)

The Centre Operations Manager will report to the Head of Hosting within the Infrastructure Services team, and is responsible, for the UK Edge Locations (stores and depots)

The Hosting Edge  Operations Manager plays a key role in ensuring project and BAU change initiatives meet objectives in a safe, non-business impacting manner into the Hosting Edge  facilities, in a timely manner. This role focuses on the technical elements of Computer Equipment rooms and the technology that is hosted within edge locations. 

Some travel is required in this role, mainly in the South East.

You will be responsible for

 

  • Maintain the day to day operational state of the Computer Equipment Rooms (CERs) environments in stores and depots (daily reports and escalation of issues as deemed necessary) across the UK estate.
  • Develop and maintain the strategy for the Hosting team and its continual improvement.
  • Manage Engineering resources and 3rd Parties working in the Edge locations.
  • Work to drive faster adoption, higher ultimate utilisation of and proficiency of the Edge locations and CER facilities.
  • Implement and maintain the Technology Hosting Operational Model.
  • Manage the relationship, service and contracts with the 3rd party Edge locations suppliers.
  • Prepare plans for development and installation of hosting assets according to present and future requirements.
  • Monitor all hardware products and ensure compliance to the Hosting Operating Model standards and systems.
  • Work with other DC Managers globally to ensure a consistent Operating Model is applied and maintained.
  • Work closely with other Technology teams including within Infrastructure to understand and influence decisions dependent on Edge locations services.
  • Administer installation and maintenance of hosting resources in DCs and CERs.
  • Monitor and report back on key measures to show operational status of Data Centers.
  • Perform troubleshooting to identify issues and assist in timely resolution of same.
  • Ensure adherence to all established guidelines and management practices for employees including legislation.
  • Coordinate with various departments and perform integration of critical systems into infrastructure.
  • Coordinate with Technology enhancement and business teams and develop strategies to ensure achievement of Edge locations optimum capacity with regard to all Edge locations limitations.
  • Maintain expert knowledge on service mapping for knowledge of various critical systems.
  • Ensure client satisfaction and provide optimal level of customer services for various departments.
  • Maintain effective professional relationships with Technology and business managers.
  • Maintain expert knowledge on all Computer Equipment Rooms processes and industry standards.
  • Conduct impact analysis, assess change readiness and identify key stakeholders.
  • Follow change management process including completing change management risk assessments for activities within the Edge locations.
  • Identify, analyse and prepare risk mitigation tactics and manage anticipated resistance.
  • Coordinate efforts with other specialists, both internal and external.
  • Obtain assurance for the sponsoring group that the delivery of new capability is compatible with other stakeholder requirements and realises the stated benefits.

About The Infrastructure Team

The Infrastructure Engineering team design, develop and operate all infrastructure used by Tesco Technology across our data centres, offices, stores and distribution centres. This encompasses multiple domains: private and public cloud, network, end-user computing, CI/CD and monitoring toolkit. It includes both 3rd party and internally developed infrastructure applications and infrastructure that support the wider Tesco business.

Key activities include:

  • Design, develop and operate the Infrastructure platforms that allow development teams and business colleagues to consume infrastructure.
  • Design, develop and operate the automation to allow infrastructure platforms to be consumed in a controlled, auditable and repeatable manner.
  • Setting the strategy, objectives and high-level plans for infrastructure.
  • Work with development teams to collaborate in creating appropriate infrastructure solutions.
  • Evaluating partners, software and hardware and finding the right mix to deliver the strategy.
  • Driving innovation at Tesco through infrastructure transformation.
  • Defining and overseeing standards and simplification across the estate.
  • Designing, delivering and operating new and re-usable infrastructure solutions.

The Infrastructure team are supporting both the current infrastructure and also the work required to continue the transformation of Tesco Technologies Infrastructure to modern platforms that can be easily consumed through self-service APIs, automatically handle failures and use best of breed modern technologies.
