About the role

Payment Services team is at the heart of Tesco Technology, serving 28 million+ shoppers in the UK and abroad. We deliver services that take Card Payment at global scale both online and in-store, and then performs Settlement with Bank, Financial Reconciliation, Cash reports and so on. We also provide capabilities that detect and prevent fraud. We are building innovative technologies to reduce Loss. 100M+ transactions/day, multi-billion events/day, a billion pound/week.

At the core of our capability is the Card API and Payment API, that take all card payment and vault card data in a highly secure environment and performs the whole payment-lifecycle. It runs on-premise and on AWS & Azure. We embrace DevSecOps as much as we can. Automated Security Scan, Continuous Delivery, Canary, Blue-Green deployment, Feature-Flag are core to our success. Kanban is in full swing. We design and support what we code. We have a rich roadmap to deliver a over couple of years.

You will be responsible for

Lead Technical Programme Managers (TPMs) deliver complex, cross-functional technology programmes that support colleagues and help serve our customers better. They work collaboratively, influence Product, Engineering and business colleagues and lead the programme to deliver value quickly and often.

Whilst specific responsibilities will be dependent upon the changing needs of the Tesco business, the following provides an overview of the role’s key responsibilities and measures:

  • Be capable of taking on a complex technical program, working across multiple API teams to align priorities and provide sensible compromises to allow our +40,000 tills globally and all online websites and apps to be able to take payments securely, reliably, accurately.
  • Negotiate complex contracts with software and hardware vendors, banks, card issuers. Make sure Tesco’s interests are protected.
  • Manage several million pounds worth of budget.
  • Coordinate work across India and UK teams.
  • Have experience with Payments, Cards, Banks.
  • Have experience of large, complex programmes of work with multiple dependencies​ and bring that expertise into the multiple conflicting priorities and technical trade-offs required to deliver a till programme on time, on budget and to the satisfaction of our customers and colleagues.
  • Navigate the complexity of working a programme that spans multiple independent product teams and be a vocal champion for the till as a major consumer within these products. Help be the gel in good times and bad negotiating between product api teams to ensure we get the right results for them and for Tesco Till
  • Be flexible in working the correct program approach/method that help both Tesco Till succeed and the individual API products succeed in a collaborative win-win environment.
  • Have experience of working with, influencing and challenging senior stakeholders, both inside and outside of technology​.
  • Work independently and proactively with Product and Engineering teams, with little support needed from STPM
  • Bring together, coordinate and energise virtual technology teams to deliver programme goals
  • Create and track a plan to deliver the programme goals, including the technical implementation plan
  • Understand trade-offs and resulting impacts; make impacts visible to Product, Infrastructure or Engineering for the right decision to be made
  • Coach peers and other roles, teaching where required, on methodologies and programme management tools
  • This role will best suit an individual who enjoys working as part of a team, is well organised, pragmatic and a lateral thinker with an inquisitive mind who is motivated to make change for the better and, most importantly, puts our customers first.

You will need

 

  • Have a proven record of accomplishment delivering transformational technologyhaving done so across multiple teams in multiple geographies.
  • Self-starter with excellent communication skills and stakeholder management skills
  • High levels of complexity, dependencies & significant business risk.
  • Shaping programmes where the outcome definition is high level and ambiguous.  
  • Delivery of successful high profile programmes in technology, including putting a new customer facing application live.
  • Driving out decisions for new technologies.
  • Experience and understanding of agile techniques to deliver world beating products
  • A deep understanding and / or experience of technical solutions & able to foresee the impact on dependencies, delivery timelines and implementation plans
  • A deep understanding and/or experience of engineering best practices or practical infrastructure implementations so that you can appreciate delivery challenges
  • Experience of building credible relationships influencing management and leadership teams
