About the role

The Analytics Capabilities & Optimisation team is a team of Product Management, Data Analysts, BI experts and Analytics Engineers. It is responsible for defining, prioritising and delivering the self-serve analytics strategy, event streaming and optimisation capability, methods and components for enabling real-time, data-driven decision making and customer data insight across all of Tesco’s businesses. It accelerates the self-serve delivery of ad-hoc insight from customer data and enhances the value of our analysis to the business and customers. It connects the customer analytics and insight innovation needs of Tesco’s businesses to our core data platform, tools and services.

You will be responsible for

  • Translate customer needs into detailed technical and functional requirements for analysis and self-service analytics in an agile working manner.
  • Analyse customers' data, determine key performance indicators for each element of a customer experience, and then build automated performance trackers to monitor those elements on a regular basis.
  • Work with the business and Analytics community on analytical questions such as automation, pattern analysis and clustering.
  • Develop close working relationship with stakeholders, effectively listening and understanding their needs and applying persuasive skills to influence and inspire others.
  • Data extraction, transformation, and load processes to support prototyping through Alteryx, Tableau and MicroStrategy.
  • Write code supporting the development of big data-oriented solutions solving complete data integration or analytic use cases with the production-ready precision.
  • Maintain the data quality and reliability monitoring of accessed single source of truth data.
  • Assist in keeping our Business Glossary live, standardised and relevant.

You will need

The successful candidate will have a tenacious can-do, will-do mentality. Whilst being personally robust and willing to challenge the status quo, you will work closely with other team members and must be able to bring people with you.


You’ll need to have demonstrated experience of:

  • Good understanding of database/datastore technologies, including SQL Server, Hadoop, Teradata
  • Comfortable querying massive datasets using SQL (Hive/Spark, T-SQL, Teradata SQL)
  • Experience building ETL pipelines (either with software or from scratch) + understanding of best practice
  • Experience with Python (data analysis/data visualisation/automation)
  • Good understanding of data visualisation principles + tools (Tableau, Microstrategy, D3 (HTML/css/javascript) or Python (seaborn/plotly/bokeh/etc.))
  • Solid technical understanding – you will need to be comfortable having technical conversations and know when to lead, when to challenge and when to ask questions
  • Understanding of how to test, measure and validate your outputs
