About the role

Within the Space, Range and Merchandising team at Tesco, we serve customers by:

  • Deciding the mix of space we allocate to product groups in our stores based on business strategy, customer demographic, locations and shopping mission
  • Building the best product displays which are easy to shop for customers, but also operationally efficient for colleagues
  • Defining and executing the strategy for landing the best space, ranges and displays in store for our customers.

As a Product Manager in the Space, Range and Merchandising team, you drive improvements in the technology used for all the above. The team owns a combination of front-end and API technology products that manage and execute store range and product locations in the UK and internationally. A Product Manager joining this team should be interested in retail operations and its complexities, and be comfortable with enterprise and API software development.

You will be responsible for

Reporting to the Lead Product Manager, you will be accountable for driving the Range User Interface strategy, roadmap and execution, including managing Ranging Controls and Range Scheduler. You will work closely with the Range API and MyProduct:Range Product Managers to set Tesco’s Technology strategy for range management.

  • Have ownership of products involving multiple internal / external stakeholders and drive the product strategy & execution for them
  • Engage with my stakeholders to formulate the vision, strategy and long-term roadmap for my products (product mix, new products, retirement of old products) and execute them well by constantly managing my stakeholders’ expectations, working through dependencies across multiple products / teams
  • Define the boundaries of my product portfolio with other portfolios (identifying gaps, overlaps and synergies)
  • Understand key user personas, customers & stakeholders for my product and their pain points well
  • Understand and demonstrate all the features of my product to different audiences within and outside of my immediate product team
  • Effectively document and explain new requirements to the engineering team using user stories, personas, and acceptance tests and help the team in breaking down a complex piece of work / epic into smaller, deliverable chunks of value that can be delivered faster
  • Steer sprint / release planning sessions by working with my engineering counterparts to plan sprints / releases that deliver maximum business value in least effort
  • Am accountable for the performance/ adoption of my product and work towards increasing it
  • Lead discovery work and drive experiments against defined hypotheses, create MVPs towards robust data-driven decisions on product improvements and their influence on product performance indicators
  • Prioritise, coordinate and communicate the resolution of live product issues independently

You will need

Relevant Skills for this job:

  • A methodical and analytical approach, great problem-solving skills and the ability to provide logical answers to complex problems.
  • Excellent numeracy and the ability to work comfortably with data.
  • Good prioritisation techniques to refine & groom your feature backlog regularly.
  • Attitude and aptitude to learn a new product area/domain quickly.
  • Excellent written & verbal communication across multiple levels, including being able to communicate complex things simply.
  • Great presentation & persuasion skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other members of the team.

Relevant Experience for this job:

  • Knowledge and experience of product management best practice & methodologies.
  • Proven success of having managed a complex product that led to the delivery of significant value to stakeholders.
  • Understanding of User Research / Design Thinking concepts which have been applied to your product work.
  • Good knowledge in the use of tools & techniques for backlog prioritisation, managing dependencies, and gaining insights using available data points.
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of relevant product management technologies.
  • Knowledge and experience of software development methodologies and processes.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualifications / experience.
