About the role

Job Introduction

We’re accountable for the experience our customers have in stores, however and wherever they want to buy a product in Tesco.  We cover everything from a traditional manned till, all varieties of self-service checkouts to our petrol stations and pay at pump capability.  It’s a challenging area that is not just about creating amazing customer experiences but also thinking about the colleague experience as it’s colleagues that have to use them for billions of transactions every year.

It’s a very exciting time to join the team as we’re on a path of transforming our Tills globally and creating a real point of differentiation for Tesco.  This role will be key to ensuring the hardware we’re using supports the world class experience we’re striving for, appropriate for different store formats and customer needs, whilst ensuring its maximising our ROI for all markets

This role offers a fantastic opportunity for a brave Lead PM that’s not afraid to develop a strategy and drive rapid innovation in our hardware to meet current and future customer needs. This area has a substantial budget, lots of complexity and will require a global outlook.

You will be responsible for

  • Have accountability for a complex/ large product(s)/ that involve multiple internal/external stakeholders, and drive product strategy, roadmap and execution for that by leading a team of talented PMs
  • Understand my business stakeholders and their pain points really well and steer my team in the right direction by putting best team members in the most value generating products/ business priorities
  • Set clear goals and KPIs for my team members and periodically review all the KPIs owned by the team spanning across multiple products and provide feedback/ suggestions on improving those
  • Handle conflicting priorities really well, communicate clearly and understands how to drive a high level of focus and excellence with a strong, talented and opinionated team
  • Identify and remove impediments faced by the team by working with my Head of Product/ other stakeholders and proactively flag off any risks/ delays in the commitments
  • Contribute in capability and capacity planning for Product Management, for my own Product area to ensure capacity to drive work
  • Build and nurture a great team of APMs, PMs for my Product ownership area, based on the business needs, strategic priorities assigned and level of focus required
  • Carry out people routines for direct reports (APMs, PMs) and develop talented people
  • Identify and remove impediments to ensure my team is successful in delivering the committed deliverables
  • Motivate the team by ensuring they have fulfilling roles, proper rewards and recognition strategies
  • Conduct fair performance appraisals and provide constructive feedback for my team/ individual to improve and facilitate the development of individuals in the team
  • Collaborate with Head of Product to understand future demand and direction of my product

Am responsible for achieving or exceeding agreed product KPIs improvements across all the Products owned/ managed by my team

  • Empathy and good listening skills to understand the needs/ pain points of your customers/ stakeholders
  • Excellent facilitation to effectively facilitate requirement gathering/elicitation sessions with senior business leaders/ stakeholders
  • Supplier management and negotiation skills
  • Knowledge of Agile methodologies, writing effective user stories/ acceptance criterions
  • Great hiring/ interviewing skills
  • Understanding of User Research/ Design Thinking concepts
  • Great coaching skills and have successfully developed rock star Product managers under your leadership
  • Great people skills and can gain respect and trust of team members and others working with you

 

Experience relevant for this job

  • Have proven success in leading a team of highly talented and opinionated product managers and took multiple ideas (at least 1 new product/idea) from conception to go-live, through standard software product development lifecycle and got measurable success across defined KPIs
  • Good domain expertise in the relevant functional area/ a large complex domain
  • Efficient in stakeholder management and has ability to steer the team in the right direction by putting best team members in the most value generating Products/ Business priorities
  • Knowledge and experience of product management best practice and methodologies and strong technical acumen
  • Technically competent to influence and understand the solution context and approach and aid engineering in estimating the complexity of work being requested
  • Have great prioritization and decision making skills  and have made good decisions/ judgements around business priorities and resource allocation, etc
  • Experience in building/ hiring, grooming a team of Product Managers
  • Experience working with hardware is desirable but not essential.
