The team are responsible for day-to-day operational management of the international transport of Tesco product, bought on direct terms from all four corners of the globe, covering all categories and delivering into our UK & CE businesses. Transporting over 75,000 shipping containers, co-ordinating 25,000 trucks from Europe and over 5 million kilos of airfreighted cargo every year. They manage the safe movement of product flows from all sources into our UK and CE Distribution Centre's.

The team are responsible for inbound logistics & ensure orders are delivered on time & in the most efficient way. Primary work collaboratively with commercial teams & suppliers to understand end-to-end supply chain requirements & create innovative transport and storage solutions. The team work innovatively to support smaller suppliers to reduce transportation costs & use award winning rail networks to help contribute to a reduction in carbon emissions.
Fleet
The team are continuously looking at new technology to improve our operations. One of the largest challenges currently is how to decarbonise our fleet to help Tesco meet its climate change targets. As part of this Tesco has made a public commitment to have a fully electric dotcom van fleet by 2028. This team are planning the roll out project for 150 EVs due into Tesco this year, supporting the appropriate infrastructure instalment & developing metrics to assess EV performance in our operation.
Grocery Home Shopping
Tesco's delivery service, Tesco Grocery Home Shopping which makes 15,000 delivery journeys every day, is on the road to cutting its CO2 emissions by more than 7,000 metric tonnes in just one year thanks to the introduction of Lightfoot driver improvement technology across its fleet. Tesco is using the technology to manage emissions as demand for its home delivery services soared during the COVID-19 pandemic, with more vehicles covering more miles.
Working in Distribution
The team collaborate with internal teams (Supply Chain, Merchandising, Buying, Distribution, Technical, Finance & Tax) and external teams (freight managers, shipping lines, hauliers & airfreight forwarders). Logistics Performance is responsible for maintaining & developing the system architecture & tools we use to manage our global operation. They also analyse operational data to gather insight for Global Logistics, allowing us to understand the performance of each element of the operation.
Primary are responsible for the delivery of products from suppliers into the Tesco distribution network. They work closely with established logistics partners such as Fowler Welch, Warrens and Eddie Stobart’s to get the best service and coverage across the UK & Europe. Primary provide multi-modal solutions to deliver the best availability for our customers. By Tesco utilising the train we have taken 15m miles per year off our roads, with Carbon Emissions savings of 8.3m kg C02 emissions per year
Within a year of the new technology deployment, Tesco will deliver a saving of 7,346 tonnes of CO2 across the UK & ROI. It is predicted the fleet will achieve even greater savings year-on-year as more Grocery Home Shopping drivers engage with Lightfoot’s tech, which encourages smooth, safe & efficient driving through app-based tech that rewards better driving. These improvements have been realised with our existing fleet of vehicles & its employee engagement is set to rise as emissions fall.

This building's name is inspired by 72 year-old Jane Snowball, who used a television remote to order groceries while sat in her armchair at home. What she and others didn’t realise at the time was that this was the world’s first home online shopping trip. Our Business Support, Customer Fulfillment and Online teams are based here and there is a restaurant, bicycle parking and showers, dry cleaning drop off service and cash machine.
Pear – Welwyn Garden City
This building name is inspired by the project name used during our 2003 acquisition of T & S Stores. Many of these stores were converted to our Express format to help us to build our convenience offer for customers. Our General Merchandise, Supply Chain and Operations teams are based here and there is a restaurant and bicycle parking.
Highwoods – Welwyn Garden City
This building's name is inspired by our first ‘out of town’ destination food store, ‘Colchester Highwoods’. Our Pensions, Property, and Maintenance & Engineering teams are based here.
Checkout – Welwyn Garden City
This building name is inspired by Operation Checkout, one of our most iconic price campaigns. During an economic downturn in the UK in 1977, we launched massive price cuts to help customers on very tight budgets. Our Food and Quality teams are based here and this is our main building with a restaurant, gym, bicycle parking and showers, dry cleaning drop off service, colleague baby room, cash machine, car charging and post box.
Omega – Welwyn Garden City
This building name is inspired by the pioneering work of the team which developed Clubcard – one of the most important retail innovations of the 20th century. Our Marketing, Communications, Tesco Mobile, Hospitality and Business Development teams are based here and there is bicycle parking, a car wash and fuel pump.
Plus – Welwyn Garden City
This building is inspired by one of our most innovative technology projects – Plus. In 1987 we introduced our first computerised tills to scan products. Our Technology team are based here and there is a restaurant, bicycle parking, dry cleaning drop off service, Click and Collect for Tesco Direct products and post office facilities.
Smile – Welwyn Garden City
This building's name is inspired by Eat Happy which started life with the project name Smile and takes education out of the classroom to show children where their food comes from. Our Human Resources Team is based here and there is a restaurant, bicycle parking and dry cleaning drop off service. This is also the location of our colleague Health and Wellness centre where colleagues can access massage therapists, GP services and beauticians.
Maldon – Welwyn Garden City
This building's name is inspired by our first self-service supermarket which opened in a converted cinema in Maldon in 1956. Our Finance, Procurement and Legal and Security teams are based here and there is a restaurant, bicycle parking, and dry cleaning drop off service, as well as it being the location for our Grocery Click and Collect service.
Strawberry - Farringdon
This building's name is inspired by the strawberry icon used by Tesco.com shoppers when we launched online shopping in the late 1990s. Our Digital team is based here.
The Nicholl Building - Dundee Customer Engagement Centre
This building's name was inspired by Mrs Nicholl, a 93 year-old customer who was moved to tears by excellent customer service from Tesco when two colleagues hand-delivered her groceries during bad weather as a ‘wee gift from Tesco’. We have a restaurant, bicycle parking, showers, Click & Collect service, cash machine, garden and games area, as well as colleague kitchens and rest areas on each floor.
Heart - Welwyn Garden City
Our building at the heart of the Welwyn Garden City Campus is now open, providing a new and exciting central hub with flexible spaces to learn, collaborate and innovate. There are facilities for well-being, a customer experience centre and a Tesco Express store.
Working in Welwyn Garden City
Our campus sits just 10 minutes walk from the centre of Welwyn Garden city with its many shops, restaurants, pubs and sports facilities. Close to the A1 and with frequent trains running to Kings Cross in as little as 26 minutes (free shuttle buses take you between the station and office) the campus is well connected to the surrounding area.
