About the role

Tesco’s Scan As You Shop service is an in-store experience that lets customers build their basket on a handheld device during their shopping journey so that they can keep a close eye on their budget and skip the queues at checkout. Since late 2021, we’ve brought the solution entirely in house, and we’re now live in over 700 stores across UK and Republic of Ireland, with plans to move into Central Europe next year.

The handset application is built on Android OS and consumes data from our Retail Platform enterprise APIs. We’re looking for a lead Java backend engineer that can help us transition into a full stack team, where all of our engineers take ownership of both frontend and backend systems.

We need someone that can lead our backend development and help to upskill our frontend engineers. At the same time, we’ll offer to train candidates in Android development - no prior experience required. This is a unique opportunity to broaden your skills and get involved with all aspects of product development.

We’re a friendly team that takes collaboration and agility seriously, looking for the right person to help us move into an exciting new chapter!

You will be responsible for

  • Developing high-quality code that can lead to rapid delivery, following standard methodologies for continuous integration and delivery
  • Working efficiently with product partners to communicate and translate their needs into improvements in your product
  • Supporting production systems, resolving incidents and performing root cause analysis and identifying patterns in code and refactoring the code towards them where it increases understanding and/or maintainability with minimal mentorship
  • Debugging/finding sophisticated problems and supporting/maintaining the software solution
  • Leading discussions on the design of the application and understanding the domain well enough to work with Product Managers to drive value

You will need

  • Experience with Java 8+
  • Experience scaling systems
  • Experience working in a collaborative team
  • A curiosity about, or experience of, Android mobile development
