"Whether it’s trading responsibly, reducing our impact on the environment, being a great employer, or supporting local communities, doing the right thing matters to Tesco." – Philip Clarke
In March 2013 we launched a National Charity Partnership with Diabetes UK through which we are working together to create healthier communities by supporting those affected by, or at risk of diabetes. We aim to raise £10m which will fund ground breaking research into a vaccine for Type 1 diabetes, improve care services for people living with diabetes and help prevent thousands of future cases of Type 2 diabetes through an awareness and education campaign. Alongside this National Charity Partnership, we also support Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life. We are in our 12th year as lead sponsor of the annual campaign which has over 200 local 5k events around the UK. 20,000 Tesco colleagues take part each year and this year, we are aiming to contribute £1million to the fight against cancer.
Our National Food Collections, in partnership with leading charities Fareshare and the Trussell Trust, help feed people in need in communities across the UK. In our first National Collection in December 2012, we collected and donated enough food for 2.4million meals and we are now striving to make the scheme bigger and better, with further National Collections planned, as well as work to address surplus food in our supply chain.
Our schools programme, Tesco for Schools and Clubs is now in its 22nd year since launching as ‘Computers for Schools’. We help children learn and have fun through this voucher programme which has donated over £195 million worth of equipment to over 45,000 organisations since 1992. We also help children get active through our support of the FA Tesco Skills programme, which provides free expert football skills coaching in primary schools. Over 4million child places have been offered since 2007.
On a local level, we work with our local communities to support causes that are important to them, and have dedicated Community Champions in over 340 stores who coordinate local charity and community donations and involvement. We give local and national charities the opportunity to engage with customers and collect in our stores. In addition, all stores have a community donation card to enable local giving and we award community grants to hundreds of local good causes each year via the Tesco Charity Trust.
There is a fantastic culture of community amongst Tesco colleagues and there are lots of opportunities to get involved in community work. From fundraising for our National Charity Partner, to volunteering at the National Food Collections, to attending a team away day decorating/gardening at a local community centre. There really is something for everyone.
